Now that the festivities are over and our normal life has resumed, I have time to sit here and think about the most interesting tidbits to share that will make it seem like we do more than wake up, eat, drive from errand to appointment to practice and back, or get in some schooling. Truth is, we don’t really do anything more exciting than that, so good news for you, this should be pretty short.
Here’s another truth: there really weren’t festivities around here either. We enjoyed our typical Christmas dinner and dessert and the rest of the holiday was spent contemplating whether or not we would have any New Year’s resolutions this time around. Not having any last year worked out really well, so we decided to continue our streak.
Honestly though, that’s not all we did. At the persistent behest of our eldest child, the second annual Allan ping pong tournament was held on one of the last evenings of the holiday. Balls were bounced, lobbed, smacked, slammed, and on many occasions, missed altogether, but long story short, some people earned more points than others, and eventually there were two contestants left to compete for the distinguished title of ‘Champion’. I’d give you all the points I won in my games if you can correctly guess who the finalists were, but that wouldn’t give you many points and you probably don’t need a bribe to make an educated prediction. A lifelong dream, since he was at least fourteen, of beating his dad at the game was finally realized for Jake that fateful night. Boy, how the table turned!
Using the words ‘bounced’, ‘lobbed’, ‘smacked’, ‘slammed’, and ‘missed altogether’ gives me a nice segue into what happened to James on Christmas night. Since it’s been so cold for so long, the pond at the bottom of our road has been frozen over more this winter than in the last few winters combined. The kids thought it would be a good idea to go down and use it as a slip-n-slide. James went one step further by slipping so hard that he smacked into the ice, slamming his face directly on the hard surface which bounced his front tooth out of alignment. Danny managed to finagle the tooth mostly back into place, several times as it kept moving out of its spot, and then James missed the Wednesday night meeting altogether since his mouth was bleeding too profusely. So far his tooth hasn’t shown signs of dying but prayers for its preservation would be appreciated.
Thank goodness the festivities are over and we can return to life as we normally know it. And by that I sarcastically mean that our life carries on no differently whether or not it’s a worldwide holiday. There will always be joys and sorrows, lobs and slams, blood and tears, beginnings and endings. Mercifully, this is the end of the post, though this new year is just beginning, which means more is sure to come.
